Why I Love This Cookie

Single-serve air fryer chocolate chip cookie

One of my favorite things about this recipe is how perfect the air fryer is for making just one cookie. There’s no need to heat up the whole oven or bake a big batch. Just put your cookie in the air fryer, and in about 10–12 minutes, it’s baked and ready to enjoy. I love how quick and convenient that is.

I also love a chocolate chip cookie that’s rich and buttery, with a little caramel flavor from the brown sugar. The semisweet dark chocolate goes so well with it, adding plenty of chocolate flavor without making the cookie overly sweet.

And the texture is just how I like it. A little crispy around the edges, thick and chewy in the middle, and especially good while it’s still warm. For me, that’s what makes a really good chocolate chip cookie.

Single-Serve Chocolate Chip Cookie Ingredients

Single-Serve Chocolate Chip Cookie Ingredients
  • 3 tbsp + ½ tsp (45 g) unsalted butter
  • 3 tbsp (40 g) brown sugar, packed
  • 2½ tsp (10 g) granulated sugar
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • ⅓ cup + 2 tbsp (55 g) all-purpose flour
  • ⅛ tsp baking soda
  • ⅛ tsp salt
  • ¼ cup (40 g) semisweet dark or good quality milk chocolate, chopped

How to Make a Single-Serve Air Fryer Chocolate Chip Cookie

how to bake cookies in the air fryer

1. Melt the butter

Start by melting the butter in a small saucepan over low heat, then pour it into a mixing bowl and let it cool slightly.

If you like a little nutty, brown-butter flavor, you can let the butter turn golden before taking it off the heat. Otherwise, simply melt it.

2. Mix in the sugars

Mixing melted butter, brown sugar, and granulated sugar with a whisk in a wooden bowl for a single serve chocolate chip cookie recipe.

Add the brown sugar and granulated sugar to your melted butter. Give it a good stir until the sugars and butter come together.

3. Add the egg yolk and vanilla

Next, add the egg yolk and vanilla extract, then stir until they’re mixed in well.

4. Add the dry ingredients

Mixing flour, baking soda, and salt into soft chocolate chip cookie dough with a spatula in a wooden bowl for air fryer chocolate chip cookies.

Add the flour, baking soda, and salt. Gently stir until the flour disappears and you have a soft cookie dough. There’s no need to keep mixing once the dough comes together.

5. Add the chocolate

Now for my favorite ingredient, chocolate.

I like to use semisweet dark chocolate because it has a richer flavor and isn’t overly sweet. Chop it into chunks, then fold most of it into the cookie dough, saving a few larger pieces for the middle and top.

6. Shape your cookie

Shaping brown butter chocolate chip cookie dough into a thick ball by hand, with chocolate pieces tucked inside before baking.

I love my cookies really chocolatey, so I’m going to add a couple of extra chocolate pieces right in the middle of the dough.

Wrap the dough around the chocolate and shape it into a ball, keeping those pieces tucked inside. Then give it a little press to flatten it slightly.

Don’t flatten it too much. You want a nice, thick cookie.

7. Get your air fryer ready

Line your air fryer basket with parchment paper or an air fryer liner, provided it’s suitable for your air fryer.

Put the cookie dough right in the middle, then press a few more chocolate pieces into the top.

8. Air fry the cookie

Air fry your cookie at 355°F (180°C) for 10–12 minutes.

You’re looking for lightly golden edges and a top that looks set, with the chocolate pieces starting to melt.

Since air fryers can cook differently, you might need to adjust the baking time slightly, especially if you’ve made your cookie quite thick.

9. Let it rest and enjoy

Once the cookie is baked, carefully lift it out using the parchment paper and let it rest for a few minutes.

It will still be quite hot, so be careful when breaking it open.

And just look at that gooey chocolate in the middle. The outside has a little crispness, the inside is soft and chewy, and you get plenty of chocolate in every bite.

Notes

  • Measure Your Flour Carefully: Since we’re making just one cookie, even a little extra flour can change the texture. I recommend weighing the flour, but if you’re using measuring cups, spoon it in gently and level off the top.
  • Choose Your Favorite Chocolate: I love semisweet dark chocolate, but milk chocolate works if you prefer a sweeter cookie. For that gooey chocolate center, chopped chocolate from a bar works better than chocolate chips, which tend to hold their shape.
  • If Your Dough Feels Sticky: If the melted butter makes your dough too soft to shape, put it in the fridge for about 15–20 minutes. This will firm it up and help keep your cookie from spreading too much.
  • Baking Without an Air Fryer: You can also bake this cookie in a regular oven at 350°F (180°C) on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Start checking after 12 minutes and bake until the edges are set and lightly golden. The oven baking time may be a little longer.
  • Try It With Ice Cream: For an extra treat, add a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top of your warm cookie. The combination of cold ice cream, chewy cookie, and melted chocolate is delicious.
  • Storing and Reheating Your Cookie: If you have any leftovers, keep them in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days. To enjoy the cookie warm again, microwave it in short 10-second bursts until the chocolate softens.

A Few Helpful Cookie Recipe Tips

Single serve air fryer chocolate chip cookie with a golden brown crust and melted chocolate chunks, being placed on a white plate.

Choose your favorite chocolate: I prefer semisweet dark chocolate, but milk chocolate works too if you like a sweeter cookie. You can also use a mixture of chocolate chips and chopped chocolate.

Keep your cookie fairly thick: Pressing the dough down slightly helps it bake more evenly. If you make it too flat, you won’t get quite the same thick, chewy texture.

Use a few larger chocolate pieces: Chopped chocolate works especially well for the filling. Keep a couple of bigger pieces for the center and use the smaller chunks throughout the dough.

Be careful with parchment paper: Check your air fryer’s instructions before using parchment or a liner. If permitted, keep it secured beneath the cookie and never put loose parchment into the air fryer while preheating.
