Choosing the Best Sweet Potato for Your Air Fryer Fries

Garnet sweet potatoes

For this air fryer sweet potato fries recipe, I went with Garnet sweet potatoes. They’re really sturdy, which means they don’t turn to mush when you cook them, and they crisp up nicely on the outside while staying soft inside.

Plus, they’re naturally sweet, so they taste amazing without needing a lot of extras. I find that Garnets just work the best for getting that perfect balance of crispy and tender in the fries.

If you are not sure which sweet potato to pick for this recipe, take a look at my latest post. I talk about eight different kinds of sweet potatoes and what each one tastes like.

This Air Fryer Sweet Potato Fries recipe makes simple ingredients into crispy and tasty fries that are healthier than traditional French fries. They are great as a side dish for your favorite meals or as a standalone healthy snack. The air fryer allows you to cook these sweet potato fries with minimal oil, so they turn out crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, adding a burst of flavor and texture to your meals.

Ingredients

  • 1 large sweet potato (about 1 cup or 200 grams), peeled

  • 2 tablespoons (30 ml) of avocado oil

  • dash of salt (approximately 1/8 teaspoon or 0.75 grams)

  • dash of paprika powder (approximately 1/8 teaspoon or 0.75 grams)

Directions

  • Prepare the Sweet Potato: Start by peeling the sweet potato. Once peeled, slice it into even sticks approximately ⅓ inch thick to ensure they cook evenly.peeling the sweet potatoe
  • Season: In a large bowl, combine the sliced sweet potatoes with avocado oil, a dash of salt, and paprika powder. Toss everything together until the fries are well coated with the oil and seasonings.

  • Preheat the Air Fryer: While your air fryer may not require preheating, doing so can help start the cooking process faster. Set your air fryer to 380°F (193°C) and allow it to heat up for a few minutes.

  • Cook: Place the seasoned sweet potato fries in the air fryer basket in a single layer; this might need to be done in batches depending on the size of your air fryer. Cook for about 30 minutes, shaking the basket halfway through to ensure even cooking.

  • Serve: Once the sweet potato fries are cooked and have a crispy exterior and soft interior, remove them from the air fryer. Serve immediately while they are still hot and crispy for the best texture and flavor.

Notes

  • Cut Evenly: Ensure that your sweet potato fries are cut to a uniform thickness to promote even cooking. Uneven pieces may lead to some fries cooking faster than others, resulting in a mix of burnt or undercooked fries.
  • Avoid Overcrowding: To achieve that desirable crispy texture, make sure not to overcrowd the air fryer basket. Air circulation is key in an air fryer, and overcrowding can lead to steaming rather than crisping. Cook in batches if necessary.
  • Preheat the Air Fryer: Although not all models require this, preheating your air fryer can help you achieve a crisper exterior on your fries. It takes just a few minutes and can make a significant difference in the cooking process.
  • Shake or Toss Midway: Halfway through the cooking time, give the fries a good shake or toss. This ensures that they are evenly cooked on all sides and get evenly crispy.
  • Season Well: While this recipe uses just salt and paprika, feel free to experiment with other seasonings such as garlic powder, onion powder, or a sprinkle of cayenne for a bit of heat. Season the fries while they’re still hot to help the spices stick better.
  • Watch the Cooking Time: Depending on your air fryer model and the thickness of your fries, cooking times can vary. Start checking them a few minutes before the suggested cooking time ends to ensure they don’t overcook.
  • Serving Suggestions: Sweet potato fries go well with various dips. Try them with a simple garlic mayo, spicy ketchup, or even a yogurt-based dip for a delicious treat.
  • Storage and Reheating: If you have leftovers, store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator and reheat them in the air fryer for a few minutes to bring back their crispiness. They’re best enjoyed fresh but can be revived effectively with a quick reheat.
