Why I love this air fryer omelet

air fryer breakfast

This is one of those breakfasts that really is as simple as it looks. Once the eggs, ham, and cheese are in the basket, the air fryer takes care of the cooking.

I also love that you don’t have to flip or fold the omelet. It cooks right in the liner and comes out as one thick, cheesy omelet that’s easy to slice into two servings.

And 10 minutes for a hot breakfast? I’ll take that any morning.

Texture + flavor

air fryer eggs

The eggs cook up soft and fluffy in the middle, with a little golden color around the edges and across the top.

Then you get salty bites of ham and melted cheese throughout. Cheddar gives it a slightly sharper flavor, while Monterey Jack is a little milder and melts beautifully. I like either one here.

It’s simple, cheesy, filling, and super satisfying without needing a long ingredient list.

Air fryer omelet ingredients

classic omelette ingredients
  • 4 large eggs
  • 5 slices ham, chopped
  • ½ cup shredded cheese, such as cheddar, Monterey Jack, or a blend
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper

A quick note about the cheese

shredded cheese

You can use whatever shredded cheese you already like with eggs. Cheddar is my usual choice, but Monterey Jack, Colby Jack, or a cheddar blend all work really well.

Freshly shredded cheese usually melts a little more smoothly, but pre-shredded cheese is completely fine for a quick breakfast like this.

Equipment

Note: Make sure the liner or parchment is weighed down by the eggs before running the air fryer. Loose parchment can lift toward the heating element from the moving air.

Step 1: Add the eggs

First, lightly whisk 4 eggs with the salt and pepper, then pour them into the air fryer basket, using an air fryer liner or a piece of parchment paper with raised sides.

You only need to whisk the eggs until the yolks and whites are mixed together. There’s no need to beat them for ages.

Step 2: Add ham and cheese

Then, add the chopped ham and a generous handful of shredded cheese over the eggs. I like using cheddar or Monterey Jack here, but you can use whatever cheese you have.

Try to keep most of the ham sitting in the egg mixture rather than piled in one spot so it heats through evenly.

Step 3: Air fry the omelet

Air fryer omelet cooking in the basket until the eggs are set and the cheese is melted.

Air fry the eggs at 350°F (177°C) for about 10 minutes, until the omelet is fully set in the middle and lightly golden around the edges and on top.

Top Tip: Start checking around 8 minutes if your air fryer tends to cook quickly. The center should look set rather than wet or liquid when you gently move the basket.

Once it’s cooked, let the omelet sit for a minute before lifting it out and slicing.

Did You Know: Eggs continue to firm up slightly from the heat they’re holding after cooking, so you don’t need to leave the omelet in until it looks dry.

And that’s it, your fluffy, cheesy air fryer omelet is ready for breakfast.

How long to cook an omelet in an air fryer

how long to cook omelet in air fryer

For this 4-egg omelet, 10 minutes at 350°F (177°C) works well.

Air fryers do vary, though, so yours may finish a minute or two earlier. That’s why I recommend checking the middle around the 8-minute mark the first time you make it.

If the center still looks wet, give it another minute or two and check again.

Avoid cooking it much longer than necessary. Eggs can go from tender to a little rubbery pretty quickly once they are fully set.

Notes

  • Best cheese choices: Cheddar, Monterey Jack, Colby Jack, mozzarella, or a cheese blend all work well. You can also swap the ham for cooked bacon or cooked breakfast sausage.
  • Check before 10 minutes: Start checking around 8 minutes because air fryers can cook at different speeds. The center should look set and no longer wet, but avoid cooking it until the eggs become dry or rubbery.
  • Avoid watery add-ins: If you want to add mushrooms, spinach, peppers, or onions, cook them first and keep the amount fairly small. These vegetables can release moisture and leave the middle of the omelet too wet.
  • Serve it your way: Serve the omelet on its own or add toast, fresh fruit, a bagel, or breakfast potatoes on the side. It also slices easily into 2 portions for a simple breakfast.

Easy air fryer omelet swaps

omelet ingredients options

This is an easy recipe to change without turning it into something completely different.

  • You can swap the ham for cooked bacon or cooked breakfast sausage. Just make sure any meat you add is already fully cooked before it goes into the eggs.
  • You can also add a small amount of finely chopped bell pepper, green onion, or cooked mushrooms.
  • Don’t go too heavy on watery vegetables, though. Too much moisture can make the center take longer to set.
  • For the cheese, cheddar, Monterey Jack, Colby Jack, mozzarella, or a blend are all good options.

What to serve with it

freshly cut and mashed avocado

This air fryer breakfast is filling enough on its own, but it’s also really good with toast, mashed avocado, fresh fruit, or breakfast potatoes.

For something lighter, I like it with a few tomatoes or some fresh fruit on the side.

And if you’re feeding more people, make another batch rather than overfilling the liner. A thicker omelet will take longer to cook through in the middle.

Storing leftovers

how to store omelette

Let any leftover omelet cool, then place it in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.

I wouldn’t freeze this one unless you really need to. Cooked eggs can become a little watery or rubbery once frozen and reheated, so in my opinion, this one is much better fresh or refrigerated.
