Step 1: Milk and egg go in first

Pour the milk into the bread pan, then crack in the egg.

Top Tip: For a tangier flavor profile, substitute buttermilk for regular milk (keeping the same measurement).

Step 2: Time to sweeten it up

Add the sugar, salt, and that spoonful of honey.

adding honey into mixture

Note: A little honey goes a long way, so don’t overdo it or the bread may be too dense.

Step 3: Put flour on top

Just dump it in, but if you want an extra fluffy loaf, I would recommend sifting it first.

Step 4: Yeast goes last

Make a tiny well in the flour and drop in the yeast.

Tip: Keep the yeast away from the wet ingredients until mixing starts—this helps with a proper rise.

Step 5: Press start and walk away – Select the basic bread setting, set the crust to medium, and that’s it! Now go chill while the machine does all the hard work.

Step 6: Let the magic happen – Your kitchen is about to smell amazing as it mixes, kneads, rises, and bakes to perfection.

Step 7: Time to slice – Once it’s done, take the bread out, let it cool for a bit (if you can wait), then cut into the softest, fluffiest bread ever.

Notes

  • Check your dough – After 5–10 minutes of kneading, take a look inside. If the bread machine milk bread dough seems too dry, add a teaspoon of milk.
  • Use room-temperature milk – Cold milk can slow the rise in this milk and honey bread recipe.
  • Try different honey – Clover is classic, but wildflower adds a unique touch to this bread recipe with honey instead of sugar.
  • Measure flour by weight (530g) rather than volume (4 cups) for more consistent results. Flour can easily become compacted in measuring cups.
  • If your bread machine has a “delay” function, set it up before bedtime for fresh bread in the morning – this recipe works well with a delayed start.

Why Use Honey in This Recipe?

You might be wondering—why add honey when there’s already sugar in this white bread recipe? Well, honey does more than just sweeten!

why use honey

It helps keep the bread soft and moist longer, so it doesn’t dry out as quickly. Plus, honey gives the crust that gorgeous golden-brown color and adds a rich, subtle flavor that sugar alone can’t achieve.

Using both sugar and honey creates the perfect balance—just the right sweetness, a soft texture, and that bakery-style finish. If you haven’t tried a bread recipe with honey instead of sugar before, this is the perfect one to start with!

Keeping Your Bread Fresh

milk and honey bread recipe
  • Let your bread cool completely before storing it – warm bread creates moisture that ruins the crust.
  • For day one, I keep mine in a paper bag on the counter to maintain that perfect crispy outside and soft inside.
  • After that, wrap it in plastic to prevent it from drying out.
  • My best tip? Slice the whole loaf once cooled and freeze what you won’t eat right away. Just grab slices as needed and toast them.
  • Never refrigerate this bread – it’ll get stale super fast. Keep it at room temperature or freeze it.
  • This honey bread stays good for about 2-3 days on the counter before it starts getting stale.
