Best Lentils For This Recipe

For these lentil patties, red lentils are my go-to choice. They cook quickly and have a mild, slightly sweet flavor that blends perfectly with the spices in the recipe. Plus, they get soft enough to bind the patties together nicely without needing too much additional work.

Most supermarkets have them or you can get these organic ones on Amazon below.

However, you can also use green or brown lentils if you prefer a firmer texture. They have a slightly earthier taste and hold their shape better, which can add a bit more bite to your patties. Just keep in mind that they take a bit longer to cook than red lentils.

Experiment with different types to find your favorite, but red lentils are a great place to start for this recipe.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups (285 grams) dried red lentils

  • 3 cups (720 milliliters) cold water for soaking

  • 1 large Shallot, peeled and chopped

  • 2 Cloves garlic, crushed and chopped

  • 1 Medium carrot, peeled and grated

  • 1 Small bunch parsley, finely chopped

  • 1 tsp Salt

  • 1/2 tsp Black pepper

  • 1 tbsp Tomato puree

  • Cooking oil for frying

Directions

  • Soaking the Lentils: Place 1 1/2 cups (285 grams) of dried red lentils in a large bowl. Cover with 3 cups (720 milliliters) of cold water and let soak for 2 hours.Soaking the Lentils in a bowl
  • Draining of the Lentils: After soaking for two hours, pour the lentils into a sieve to drain the water.

Let them sit in the sieve for a few minutes, allowing all the excess water to completely drain out. Transfer the drained lentils to a food processor.

If you do not have a food processor, you can use an immersion blender to blend the lentils directly in the bowl.Draining of the Lentils
  • Preparing and Adding Vegetables: Peel and chop 1 large shallot into small pieces. If using an immersion blender, ensure the shallot is finely chopped.

Add the shallot to the food processor with the lentils. Crush 2 cloves of garlic using the flat side of a knife, roughly chop them, and add to the food processor.

Peel and grate 1 medium carrot, then add it to the food processor. Finely chop a small bunch of parsley and add it to the food processor as well.slicing of garlic in preparation of vegetable
  • Blending the Mixture: Blend the ingredients in the food processor for 1 to 2 minutes until the mixture is smooth yet thick enough to form into patties. Scoop the lentil mixture into a large mixing bowl.blending the mixture
