Why You’ll Love These Chicken Legs

air fryer chicken legs

This is one of those easy chicken leg recipes that does not need a long ingredient list or loads of preparation. Season the chicken, add a little melted butter, and let the air fryer do the rest.

I made these in my new halogen air fryer, which has a glass cooking bowl instead of the usual non-stick basket. I really like being able to see the chicken cooking through the glass without having to keep opening the air fryer.

The chicken legs sit on a raised wire rack, allowing the hot air to circulate around them as they cook. There is no need to stand over the appliance or keep turning the chicken… just check it near the end and make sure it is fully cooked.

Texture + Flavor

The outside becomes beautifully golden, with crisp, well-seasoned skin and slightly darker edges. Inside, the chicken stays tender, juicy, and full of savory flavor.

The garlic powder and paprika keep the seasoning simple but delicious. Melted butter adds richness and helps the outside brown as it cooks. Let’s be honest… buttery, crispy chicken skin is hard to resist!

Air Fryer Chicken Legs Ingredients

Air Fryer Chicken Legs Ingredients
  • 3 chicken legs or drumsticks
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter (28 g)
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon ground black pepper

Seasoning Swaps

You can easily adjust the seasoning to suit your taste. Smoked paprika will give the chicken a deeper, slightly smoky flavor, while onion powder, dried oregano, cayenne pepper, or Italian seasoning can also work well.

For a little heat, add a small pinch of chili powder or cayenne. You do not need much, especially if you still want the paprika and garlic flavors to come through.

Note: If you use a seasoning blend that already contains salt, reduce or leave out the extra salt so the chicken does not become too salty.

Equipment

  • Halogen air fryer or conventional basket air fryer
  • Wire cooking rack, if using a halogen air fryer
  • Small bowl
  • Paper towels
  • Pastry brush or clean hands
  • Instant-read meat thermometer

How to Air Fry Chicken Legs

Step 1: Mix the Seasoning

First, add the garlic powder, paprika, salt, and ground black pepper to a small bowl. Give everything a quick mix so all the seasonings are nicely combined.

You can really use any seasoning you like here, so go with flavors you already know you enjoy with chicken.

Step 2: Dry and Season

Pat the chicken legs really dry with paper towels. Removing the moisture from the surface helps the seasoning stick and gives the skin a better chance to become crisp.

Sprinkle the seasoning all over the chicken legs, making sure you cover every side.

Top Tip: Pay extra attention to the folds and thicker areas of skin. Seasoning only the visible top of each chicken leg can leave the other side tasting plain.

Step 3: Add the Melted Butter

Drizzle the melted butter over the seasoned chicken legs. I really like using butter here because it adds plenty of flavor and helps the outside turn golden as the chicken cooks.

Use your hands to rub the butter and seasoning all over the chicken legs, turning them as you go so every side is evenly coated.

Step 4: Let the Chicken Rest

Leave the seasoned chicken legs to sit for about 15 to 30 minutes so the butter and seasoning have a little time to settle onto the chicken before cooking.

If you are leaving them out at room temperature, keep the resting time short and cook them promptly.

Step 5: Arrange the Chicken

Place the chicken legs on the wire rack inside the halogen air fryer. Leave a little space between them so the hot air can move freely around each piece.

Do not pile or overlap the chicken legs. Crowding blocks the airflow and can leave some areas pale and soft instead of golden.

Step 6: Air Fry the Chicken Legs

Place the top unit back onto the glass bowl and make sure it is sitting properly in place. Set the temperature to 400°F (200°C), then let the chicken legs cook for about 25 to 30 minutes.

One thing I really like about this halogen air fryer is that you can easily see through the glass and watch the chicken turn golden as it cooks.

Start checking the chicken at around 25 minutes. Larger chicken legs may need a few extra minutes, while smaller ones may be ready a little sooner.

Step 7: Check for Doneness

The chicken should look golden and crisp on the outside, but appearance alone is not enough to confirm that it is fully cooked.

Insert a meat thermometer into the thickest part of the chicken without touching the bone. The internal temperature should reach at least 165°F (74°C) before serving.

Top Tip: Check more than one chicken leg if they are different sizes. The smallest one may finish cooking before the largest.

Step 8: Rest and Serve

Remove the chicken legs from the air fryer and let them rest for about 5 minutes before serving. This gives the hot juices inside a little time to settle, helping the meat stay juicy when you cut into it.

And that’s it… crispy, buttery chicken legs with hardly any fuss!

Check the thickest part with a meat thermometer. Continue cooking if it has not reached 165°F (74°C).

Notes

  • Easy Seasoning Swaps: Replace the paprika and garlic powder with Cajun seasoning, Italian seasoning, lemon pepper, or your favorite chicken seasoning. Reduce the added salt if your seasoning blend already contains salt.
  • Get Crispier Chicken Skin: Pat the chicken legs very dry before adding the seasoning and butter. Leave a little space between each piece so the hot air can move around the chicken instead of trapping steam.
  • Use Another Air Fryer: You can make this recipe in a regular basket air fryer if you do not have a glass bowl halogen model. Arrange the chicken legs in one layer and cook them in batches if they do not fit without touching.
  • Adjust for Different Air Fryers: A basket air fryer may cook the chicken a little faster than a large halogen air fryer. Start checking smaller chicken legs at 20 minutes, but always cook them until the thickest part reaches at least 165°F (74°C).

What to Serve With Chicken Legs

make me an image where these chicken legs are served with mashed potatoes

These crispy air fryer chicken legs work with so many simple sides. Serve them with roasted potatoes, mashed potatoes, rice, corn on the cob, coleslaw, or a fresh green salad.

For a lighter meal, I love serving them with steamed vegetables and a simple yogurt or garlic sauce. For something more comforting, add fries and your favorite dipping sauce… how can you not?!

Storage

how to store fried chicken to keep it crispy

Allow leftover chicken legs to cool, then place them in an airtight container and refrigerate them within 2 hours of cooking.

Store them in the refrigerator for up to 3 to 4 days. Keep the chicken legs whole rather than removing the meat from the bone, as this can help prevent the meat from drying out.

How to Reheat Chicken Legs

For the best texture, reheat the chicken legs in the air fryer at 350°F (175°C) for about 5 to 8 minutes. The exact time will depend on their size and how cold they are.

Turn or reposition them only if your air fryer heats unevenly. Heat the chicken until it is hot all the way through.

You can also use the microwave, but the skin will become softer. Microwave in short bursts so the chicken does not dry out.

Can You Freeze Them?

Yes, you can freeze cooked chicken legs. Let them cool completely, wrap them well, and place them in a freezer-safe container or bag.

Freeze for up to 2 to 3 months. Thaw them overnight in the refrigerator before reheating for the most even results.

About My Halogen Air Fryer

About My Halogen Air Fryer

I really like this halogen air fryer because it has a glass bowl instead of the usual non-stick basket, and it was quite cheap too. You can easily see how the food is cooking through the glass, and it even has a self-cleaning setting, so there is less scrubbing to do afterwards.
