Why I Like Using Condensed Milk in Baking

can of sweetened condensed milk

I must say, sweetened condensed milk is a go-to ingredient in my baking arsenal. Its thick, sweet consistency adds depth and richness to cakes like no other.

It’s essentially evaporated milk with added sugar, which gives it its distinctive taste and texture. When mixed into recipes, it truly enhances both the flavor and texture of baked goods.

Also, what I really like when using condensed milk is that when it bakes, it develops a delightful caramelized taste that takes desserts to the next level.

Serving Suggestions

Serve slices of condensed milk cake with a scoop of condensed milk ice cream as I make in this video here 🙂 or a dollop of whipped cream and fresh berries for a delightful dessert option.

  • 1 teaspoon (5 ml) vanilla extract

  • 1 cup (230 grams) melted butter

  • 1 cup (306 grams; approximately ¾ of a standard 14-ounce can) sweetened condensed milk

  • 1 1/4 cups (160 grams) all-purpose flour

  • 2 teaspoons (10 grams) baking powder

  • Combine Butter and Condensed Milk: Add the melted butter to the yolk mixture, making sure it is not hot. Mix well, then add the condensed milk and stir until smooth.combining butter and condensed milk
  • Add Dry Ingredients: Sift the flour and baking powder together and gradually mix them into the wet ingredients until the batter is smooth.
  • Fold in Egg Whites: Carefully fold the beaten egg whites into the cake batter. Fold gently to maintain the airiness of the egg whites, which contributes to the cake’s fluffiness.folding the beaten egg whites into the cake batter
  • Prepare the Baking Pan: Grease a loaf pan with butter or cooking spray and lightly dust with flour to ensure the cake does not stick. Shake out any excess flour.greasing the loaf pan with butter
  • Bake the Cake: Pour the batter into the prepared loaf pan, smoothing the top with a spatula. Place in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) and bake for 50 to 60 minutes. The cake is done when it turns golden brown on top and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.baking the cake
  • Cool and Serve: Allow the cake to cool in the pan for about 10 minutes before transferring it to a wire rack to cool completely. This makes it easier to slice and serve.slicing the condensed milk cake

Notes

  • Ingredients at Room Temperature: Make sure that all your ingredients like eggs and butter are at room temperature before you start. This helps them mix better and makes your batter smoother.
  • Folding in Egg Whites: Be gentle when folding your egg whites into the batter. Use a spatula to fold and turn the bowl as you go. This helps keep the air in the egg whites, which makes your cake fluffy.
  • Adding Flavor: You can add a pinch of salt to enhance the flavors or include some lemon or orange zest for a hint of citrus.
  • Enhancing Flavor with Toppings: Once the cake is cooled, consider topping it with a light glaze or simple frosting. A cream cheese frosting or a drizzle of caramel sauce can elevate the overall taste and presentation.
  • Keeping It Fresh: If you plan to keep the cake for more than a couple of days, consider slicing it, wrapping individual slices in plastic wrap, and freezing them. This way, you can enjoy fresh cake by thawing slices as needed.
