Why You’ll Love This Air Fryer Whole Chicken

how to cook a whole chicken in an air fryer

This air fryer whole chicken gives you a full roast chicken made right in the air fryer basket. The skin browns nicely as it cooks, and the seasoning gives it that lovely golden color and roast chicken flavor.

I also like that this recipe uses a whole chicken, not just chicken pieces. It feels like a proper family dinner, and you can serve it with whatever sides you already have.

The main thing is making sure the chicken fits your air fryer basket. You want it to sit inside comfortably, with a little space around it, so the hot air can move around the chicken while it cooks.

Texture + Flavor

whole chicken in an air fryer

This air fryer roasted chicken comes out with crispy skin on the outside and soft, juicy meat inside. The seasoning is simple, but it still gives the chicken a really nice flavor.

The smoked paprika gives the skin that warm golden color. The mixed herbs, garlic powder, cayenne pepper, salt, and black pepper make the chicken taste savory, cozy, and a little smoky.

Let’s be honest… when the skin is golden, and the chicken is juicy, that is exactly what you want from a whole roast chicken.

Air Fryer Whole Chicken Ingredients

Here is what I use for this air fryer whole chicken recipe:

  • 3.9 pounds of whole chicken, about 1.8 kilograms
  • 1/2 tablespoon of mixed herbs
  • 2 teaspoons of smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon of garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon of cayenne pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon of salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon of black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons of cooking oil

Equipment You’ll Need

You do not need much for this recipe, which is always nice. Just make sure your air fryer basket is big enough for the chicken.

Chicken Size For The Air Fryer

The size of the chicken I am using here is 3.9 pounds of whole chicken, which is about 1.8 kilograms. I have made this roast chicken recipe a few times now, so I know that this size fits in my 5-litre air fryer basket quite nicely.

If your air fryer is around five litres too, a medium-sized chicken should fit in the basket just fine. There should still be a little space around the chicken, so the air can move around it while it cooks.

Also, make sure the chicken is not too large, because you do not want to force the air fryer basket closed.

Note: If the chicken is touching the top of the air fryer or the basket is hard to close, use a smaller chicken. A chicken that is too tight in the basket may not cook as evenly.

How To Cook A Whole Chicken In An Air Fryer

how long to cook a whole chicken in an air fryer

Cooking a whole chicken in an air fryer is mostly about using the right chicken size, setting the right temperature, and checking that the chicken is fully cooked before you slice it.

The timing can change a little depending on your air fryer and the size of your chicken, so use the time as a guide. The meat thermometer gives you the real answer.

Instructions For This Air Fryer Whole Chicken

Step 1: To make a seasoning mix, add 1/2 tablespoon of mixed herbs, 2 teaspoons of smoked paprika, 1 teaspoon of garlic powder, 1/2 teaspoon of cayenne pepper, 1/2 teaspoon of salt, 1/2 teaspoon of black pepper, and 2 tablespoons of cooking oil to a small bowl. Stir it well until all the seasoning is mixed together nicely.

Step 2: Next, rub the seasoning mix all over the whole chicken, but keep a little bit in the bowl for later. We will brush that over the chicken after we flip it halfway through cooking.

Make sure you get the seasoning over the top, the sides, and the legs, so it is nicely coated. The chicken should look evenly covered before it goes into the air fryer basket.

Top Tip: Add the seasoning in a few spoonfuls and rub as you go. This makes it easier to coat the chicken evenly instead of having one heavy patch of seasoning.

Step 3: Place the chicken into the air fryer basket. Air fry the chicken at 356°F, which is 180°C, for 30 minutes.

Make sure the chicken is sitting comfortably in the basket. You should not have to press it down or force the basket closed.

Step 4: After 30 minutes, open the air fryer and carefully flip the chicken over. Brush the little bit of seasoning mix we saved earlier over the top, then continue cooking.

Cook it for another 15 to 20 minutes, or until the skin looks golden and the chicken is fully cooked.

Top Tip: If this is your first time making a whole chicken in the air fryer, use a meat thermometer just to be sure. Every air fryer cooks a little differently, so check the thickest part of the chicken.

Step 5: The chicken is ready when the thickest part reaches 165°F, which is 74°C. Check the breast and the thigh area, but do not push the thermometer against the bone, because that can give you the wrong reading.

Golden-brown air fryer roasted chicken cooked until crispy on the outside and fully cooked through, resting in the air fryer basket after reaching a safe internal temperature.

Step 6: Take the chicken out of the air fryer basket and let it rest for about 10 minutes before carving. This helps the juices settle, so the chicken stays moist when you cut into it.

How To Tell When The Chicken Is Done

The best way to know the chicken is done is to use a meat thermometer. The thickest part of the chicken should reach 165°F, which is 74°C.

The skin should look golden, the meat should be hot all the way through, and the juices should run clear when you cut into the thickest part.

Do not rely only on the color of the outside. A whole chicken can look done on the outside before the middle is fully cooked.

Notes

  • Chicken Size Matters: Use a medium-sized whole chicken that fits comfortably in your air fryer basket. If you have to force the basket closed, the chicken is too large and may not cook evenly.
  • Check With A Thermometer: The safest way to know the chicken is done is to check the thickest part with a meat thermometer. It should reach 165°F before you take it out.
  • Seasoning Swaps: You can change the seasoning to what you like. Leave out the cayenne pepper for a milder chicken, or use Italian seasoning instead of mixed herbs.
  • Rest Before Carving: Let the chicken rest for about 10 minutes before cutting into it. This helps the juices settle, so the meat stays more juicy when you slice it.
  • Dry The Chicken First: Pat the chicken dry before adding the seasoning mix. This helps the oil and spices stick better, and it also helps the skin brown more nicely.
  • If Skin Browns Too Fast: If the skin gets dark before the chicken is fully cooked, lower the temperature a little and keep cooking until the inside reaches 165°F. This helps the middle finish cooking without burning the outside.

Common Mistakes To Avoid

Whole chicken cooked in an air fryer basket with crispy browned skin, illustrating proper chicken size and spacing for even air fryer cooking.
  • Using a chicken that is too large for the air fryer basket
  • Forcing the air fryer basket closed
  • Not leaving a little space around the chicken
  • Forgetting to flip the chicken
  • Cooking only by time and not checking the temperature
  • Cutting the chicken as soon as it comes out

The biggest one is the chicken size. If the chicken is packed in too tightly, the air cannot move around it properly, and that can affect how evenly it cooks.

Easy Seasoning Swaps

You can use any seasoning you like for this chicken recipe. I am keeping it simple here, but you can change the flavor to suit what you and your family like.

Bowl of homemade chicken seasoning and marinade with paprika, herbs, and spices mixed together, ready to use for easy seasoning swaps on air fryer whole chicken.

For a milder chicken, leave out the cayenne pepper. For more garlic flavor, add a little more garlic powder.

You can also use Italian seasoning instead of mixed herbs if that is what you have. I would keep the smoked paprika if you can, because it gives the chicken such a nice color.

What To Serve With an Air Fryer Whole Chicken

chicken dinner with mashed potatoes

This air fryer whole chicken is easy to serve with all kinds of sides. I love it with mashed potatoes, rice, salad, vegetables, or air fryer sweet potato fries.

You can also serve it with gravy, garlic sauce, barbecue sauce, or a little lemon on the side. How can you not love a dinner that works with so many sides?

Leftovers are really useful too. Slice the chicken for sandwiches, wraps, salads, rice bowls, or pasta the next day.

Storage And Reheating

Let the chicken cool, then store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 to 4 days.

To reheat, place pieces of chicken back in the air fryer at 350°F, which is 175°C, for a few minutes until hot. Smaller pieces heat faster, so start checking after 4 to 5 minutes.

You can also reheat the chicken in the microwave, but the skin will not stay crisp. The air fryer works better if you want to bring back a little of that roasted texture.
